The Skogcatt -- Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat is definitely a feast for the eyes.  With their bright, green eyes, long flowing hair, differing looks from summer to winter, one cannot help but be taken by this sweet breed of cat.

The Norwegian Forest Cat is native to Northern Europe, and is rumored to be the early ancestors of the Maine Coon cat.  They are one of the oldest breeds of cat which have adapted to very cold climates.  This breed is believed to have explored the world in the company of the Vikings.

They are often called as “Wegie” which is short for Norwegian.  Its Norse name is “Skogkatt” which literally means forest cat.  This is quite appropriate as this breed did come from the Scandinavian forests.

Norwegian Forest Cats have thick and fluffy coats, and long bushy tails that help protect them from the cold.  Their mane is quite spectacular as it is very, very long and dense and silky and soft to the touch. During the spring time, however, they tend to take off the downy undercoat and the hairs that provide them warmth and protection from the snow.  This makes for a very different look for them during the summer.  The inner-ear hair however that is used to deflect the snow and the wind remains in there all year.  Their tails can grow to as long as twelve inches or even more.  They are quite large cats that can weigh up to 10 kilograms for a male, and about half that size for females.  Like Manxes, their hind legs are longer than the front legs.

These cats appear in most colors – ranging from pure white to deep black.  They also can have every possible pattern and color combination you can think of.  For darker cats,  they require less undercoat as they absorb more heat.  Very little or no maintenance is needed to maintain its beautiful coat.

Norwegian Forest Cats are also known for their intelligence and playfulness.  They enjoy being in the company of humans or other felines.  If left alone, they will themselves look for company.  They enjoy being outdoors, which suits them as they are well equipped for the cold climates.  They are also great hunters.  They are not high-strung and are not easily stressed.  This makes them perfect for families and for children.  Their patience also makes it easier for them to be around children.  If you prefer cats that easily bonds with you and likes being with you, and cats that are not demonstrative or have to be petted or pampered all the time, cats that do not talk all the time but only when it needs something, then this breed is for you!  They enjoy climbing trees outdoors, and appliances, book shelves or any elevated area indoors.  They can even climb down trees head first.  They are quite good household pets that are low maintenance.  They are good family members, like most cats are.  They are known to be gentle, friendly cats.
