Ocicat : The Domesticated Wildcat Having a pet for companion is one of the longest and most common habits of man. With that, one of the most common animals used as a pet by people is the domesticated cat. Cats were originally domesticated in Africa and Egypt; so basically they have been around as human pets for almost ten thousand years already. They can be taught simple commands and sometimes they have been known to use simple mechanisms such as door knobs and simple locks. Cats are wonderful pets; they are skilled predators which is useful for removing house pests such as rats, snakes and other vermin. And if you are looking for the wild look of a predatory cat but with nature of a domestic cat then the ocicat is for you.
The ocicat, named after the ocelot due to its appearance, is a rare breed of domesticated cats. It is a mix of siamese and abyssinian cats along with American shorthair cats. This breed is relatively new and this gives the ocicat its distinctive wild look. This cat is well built, has great vitality, and is very powerful yet agile for its size. It is an athletic and graceful cat which complements its wild appearance. They are actually a very outgoing breed of cats. They have a large array of tricks which includes but are not limited to fetching, coming close when called, sit and lie down. Because of this, the ocicat has been known as a dog-cat or a dog in a cat’s body. This breed is always friendly, going near strangers to be petted which makes them ideal family pets. The coat of the ocicat has distinctive marking which is similar to a spotted cat; this is what gives the ocicat its wild appearance. In general, its markings should be clearly visible from any angle. The markings on the head should be similar to other spotted cats then the markings on the neck and legs should be broken; the more broken the markings are the better. However, faint markings would be typical for lighter coloured ocicats. There are different known colours of the ocicat. Chocolate silver, black silver, blue, lavender, black or tawny, cinnamon, blue silver, cinnamon silver, fawn silver and fawn are the most common colours of this breed. The ears of an ocicat are always alert and are moderately large. They have almond shape eyes which lean slightly upward towards the ears with intense colour. When it comes to the body, the ocicat has a rather large, solid and long body. It has an athletic appearance which complements its active lifestyle. Their legs are also well built and defined. They are not that long and are very powerful. Their paws are also muscled and are in good proportion with their legs. The tail is long and it’s not too thick, not too thin. An ocicat is a great family pet and is perfect for those looking for an active pet. They have a unique wild look but they are very friendly which is a beautiful contrast. |
